Natural Recreation Areas

Auburn State Recreation Area - Entrance on Hwy. 49, 1 mile south of I-80, 530-885-4527

This 30,000-acre state park is a popular spot for fishing, hiking, mountain biking , camping, white-water rafting and recreational gold panning. The park features trout fishing, more than 58 miles of hiking trails and the Mammoth Bar Off-Highway Vehicle Park, 530-885-5821. Primitive campsites are available in five designated areas. NORTHSTAR-AT-TAHOE, and SQUAW VALLEY have great mountain biking trails that are used for ski trails or slopes in the winter

THE TAHOE RIM TRAIL is a challenge for any mountain biker even the most experienced.

THE AMERICAN RIVER BIKE TRAIL is a 32 mile paved trail beginning at Beal's Point and continuing along Folsom Lake, Lake Natoma, and the American River to Historic Old Sacramento. Located in the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, Folsom.

THE MINER'S RAVINE BIKE TRAIL paved, off-street biking and hiking path is open year round and crosses five bridges and many streams.

Hiking

The Auburn area has a myriad of hiking trails; Call the Auburn State Recreation Area for information: 530-885-4527

PLACER NATURE CENTER: 530-878-6053, Trails easily accessible for children.

MINERS RAVINE, Granite Bay: A half-mile hike that ventures into the flora and fauna in the Sierra foothill woodland habitat.

MAIDU PARK, Roseville: A trail and interpretive area that showcases petroglyphs and other archaeological reminders of our Native American culture.

LONG LAKE: (Kidd and Cascade Lakes are close by) an easy half day trip for the family. Soda Springs Rd. exit off I-80

LOCH LEVEN: a full day moderate hike, a bit steep so judge accordingly for the family. Big Bend exit off I-80

PLACER BIG TREES GROVE: The Sierra's northernmost grove of Giant Sequoias and a well maintained trail that wanders through the forest on the Foresthill Divide. 27 miles east of Foresthill on Mosquito Ridge Rd.

GROUSE FALLS: Eight miles from Placer Big Trees. The trail to view the falls is an easy 1/3 mile walk. For information: Foresthill Ranger District 530-367-2224

OVERLAND EMIGRANT TRAIL; Explore a portion of the historic trail at Big Bend in the Cisco Grove area. Evidence of covered wagons are visible along the trail. Big Bend exit off I-80 SHIRLEY LAKE TRAIL , SQUAW VALLEY: At the end of Squaw Peak Rd.(near the tram building) begins a path that follows Squaw Creek for 2.5 miles each way to Shirley Lake and passes waterfalls and canyon boulders. Stay to the left side of the creek on your way uphill and to the right of the creek on your way down. The hike is somewhat difficult and takes two to three hours. Horseback Trails

The Trails throughout Placer County are both beautiful and rugged, including the famous Western States Trail that hosts the 100 Mile Tevis Cup Ride. There are several private stables that have horses available for rent.

OHV Recreation

Mammoth Bar OHV Area is part of the Auburn State Recreation Area. The area is under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Reclamation and is operated by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. For more information, call 530-885-5821

A major supplier of granite for many of California's buildings including the State Capitol in Sacramento, Griffith Quarry's history dates back to its founding in 1864. The park boasts three miles of nature trails that offer views of the old quarry sites.

160 acres includes northernmost stand of giant sequoias, nature trails, restrooms, and picnic areas.

TAHOE NATIONAL FOREST, 530-256-4531
Over 800,000 acres with more than 500 miles of hiking trails, 84 campgrounds and more han 20 picnic areas. Year round recreation includes hiking, fishing,skiing, horseback riding hunting, boating and swimming. Also hundreds of miles of rivers from the Yuba River American River and the Truckee River.
